I have been charged with a "violent crime." What does that mean?

In state court a "violent" crime charge has several ramifications, including:

  • Parole eligibility is 1/3 of the sentence as opposed to ¼ of the sentence for non-violent crimes.
  • If you are convicted of a second violent crime you are ineligible for parole. You must "max" out your sentence.
