How do the Federal sentencing guidelines affect a federal criminal case?
The purpose of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines is to ensure uniformity of sentences among all persons charged with criminal offenses. The guidelines take into account the aggravating and mitigating factors inherent in every criminal case to determine an offense conduct score. This "score" or number is then contrasted with a person's prior criminal history on a sentencing grid to determine that person's sentence.
